Eligibility for new graduate registration

You are eligible for registration on the general register in South Australia as a new graduate if:

  • Your principal place of residence is in South Australia, or you propose to have your principal place of residence in South Australia
  • You have been awarded a qualification recognised by the VSBSA for registration on the general register
  • You are medically fit to provide veterinary treatment as a veterinary surgeon
  • You are a fit and proper person to be registered on the general register

Awards of Qualification

The VSBSA can grant registration to applicants who have been awarded a recognised qualification in veterinary science for the purpose of registration on the general register. Completing your academic studies is not the same as being awarded a degree in veterinary science by the relevant university. The presence of a conferral statement on your academic transcript confirms that you have qualified for your award.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Section 44(1) of the Veterinary Practice Act 2003 requires that all veterinary surgeons providing veterinary treatment for fee or reward in South Australia be covered by a professional indemnity insurance arrangement unless exempted by the Board. Veterinary surgeons in Government employment are exempt from this requirement.

The Board’s Professional Indemnity Insurance Requirements are published on the ‘Registration’ page of its website.   Failure of a veterinary surgeon to be covered by a professional indemnity insurance arrangement which meets the Board’s requirements is an offence under section 44 of the Veterinary Practice Act 2003. Maximum penalty: $10,000.

2. A copy of the degree certificate by which the applicant claims eligibility for registration.

  • (Preferred Method) The VSBSA has partnered with MyEquals. You can submit your academic transcript to us via MyEquals. Instructions on how to do so can be found here. Once you have submitted via MyEquals, your certificate will be shared with us directly (no further action required once submitted).
  • If you are unable to access your academic transcript through MyEquals, the copy must be certified as being a true copy of the original document by a person authorised to do so. For certification instructions, please refer to the document entitled Certifying Documents (link opens in new tab)
  • If you do not have your degree certificate at the time you apply for registration, you may provide a completed original official academic transcript.
  • If you do not have an original official academic transcript, you may provide a certified copy of a printed version of a completed digital academic transcript.
